LETTER TO MY DAD
Three weeks is what I remember
From the time you told me you had cancer
Until the day you died.
We never got to say goodbye
I never got to say thank you.
I see you looking at me and saying "Thank you, for what?"
Thank you for everything, Dad.
I see you smiling at me the way you always did
So much love in your eyes, so much fun in your smile.
How can you thank me?
Because you taught me so much.
So much? You say.
So much more than I can say.
I didn't know life could be hard.
But I watched your life and wished I could make it easier.
I didn't know life could be unfair.
You showed me to be fair anyway.
I didn't know life could bring you down.
You showed me drugs and alcohol are no way to go up.
I didn't know there would be times of sadness
You showed me pills don't make you happy.
I didn't know I was going to lose you so fast
You showed me the meaning of the word loss.
I didn't know I was going to have to be strong
You showed me I already was.
