I also had to recover from the season 6 finale of Mad Men. It was so good, I couldn't sleep afterwards. Here was the question:
Did you ever hit rock bottom?
Remember, I have written about this before. I truly don't believe there is a "rock bottom." I think it's wherever you think it is. Some of us hit it earlier than others, but that doesn't mean you don't get to experience it.
I've been there a couple of times in my life, and I now realize, it's kind of an emotional tool for me. When there's no place to go but up, at least that's what you tell yourself, what do you do? You start going up.
When you can't take the pain anymore, you take your hand off of the burner. Then, you see a small glimmer of light and you follow the light.
Besides that benefit of the rock bottom feeling, there is also one I've experienced about coming clean. Don had that one last night. He came clean about his past, and from the look on his face, it was the best moment of his life.
I kind of felt that way when I started writing about getting pregnant in high school and the two abortions I went through. It felt like a coming clean, because I lived with so much shame and secrecy surrounding them.
I was tired of wearing the mask of a perfect life. I was also tired of everyone thinking I had answers to questions that I do not have.
Pro life people think having an abortion is a sin. Pro abortion people believe there are no after affects of an abortion. They both were wrong for me.
I don't believe in sin anymore, so that made it easy to let go of the shame and pain of having an abortion. It's all how you look at things. If you believe in sin, then you have to figure out what is and isn't a sin. If you don't believe in sin, you can do away with all of those conflicts in your soul.
If you believe you are going to experience shame and sadness after an abortion, you will. If you don't believe that, you won't.
If you believe you have hit a kind of rock bottom in your life and you are now wanting to move on - do it.
If you want to keep hitting a bottom, you can do that too. During Season 6, Don looked like he hit rock bottom a couple of times. Last night, he decided his bottom had truly reached a bottom. He saw that glimmer of light.
It's all up to you. And, you will never prove yourself wrong, no matter what you do.
